This highly detailed Stump is from a photo I took while visiting the Baca Wildlife Refuge in Crestone, Colorado.

Drawn with Japanese graphite on archival paper, I spent well over 20 hours drawing this incredibly interesting old stump.

While drawing, I wondered what sort of life this old stump had seen. Evidence, the broken trunk, not purposely cut. Fed on by innumerable insects, who in turn, attracted wood peckers, and finally a family of chipmunks. Although maybe not alive any longer, this stump continues to have a very real purpose.
